CAN HYPNOTHERAPY CURE MY PHOBIA?

Yes. We all experience some forms of negative input to our learning; for example - a child sees their mother screaming at the sight of a spider, this then teaches the child to be afraid of spiders. This type of phobia responds well to hypnotherapy.

CAN HYPNOTHERAPY MAKE ME PERFECT?

Hypnotherapy cannot be used as a magic wand to make you a perfect person, but it can be used to reduce or eliminate the habits and traits that prevent you from being more like the person you want to be. The important aspect of therapy is to define exactly what it is that you want because your subconscious will work to the definitions you give it.

DOES HYPNOTHERAPY WORK?

Hypnosis has fascinated psychologists and medical professionals for well over a century and has been subjected to a great deal of rigorous testing and research.  It also has an enviable and long-standing reputation for effectiveness among the general public.

When it comes to my clients, I get around 87% of all enquiries from word of mouth referrals from previous and existing clients - so on that basis, you would have to say that

IT TRULY DOES WORK.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hypnotherapy has an almost limitless amount of uses. Since we experience everything we do through our interpretation in our mind, the way we interpret or filter this information can change the way we think and feel and behave.

WHY DON'T MORE PEOPLE USE HYPNOTHERAPY?

Why don't more people take their vitamins? Or exercise? We know what's good for us but that doesn't mean we'll do it. We're busy. Most of us barely keep up with all the things we feel we have to do, let alone all that stuff that seems "optional." The other reason, I believe, is that hypnosis appears very simple. So simple, that people think it's too easy to do any good. The truth is, an activity does not need to be complex in order to be beneficial. (i.e sit-ups and flossing and swallowing those vitamin pills!)

HOW DOES THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND ACCEPT HYPNOTIC SUGGESTIONS?

Hypnotic suggestions bypass the intellectual mind, called the "conscious," and zero in on the subconscious. When given a new suggestion that is within the bounds of a person's belief system and moral orientation, the subconscious mind accepts it literally as a new reality.

What is hypnosis?

Many people claim that they have never been hypnotised, but they do admit to having drifted off whilst thinking about a loved one, forgetting large chunks of a car journey (commonly known as highway hypnosis), or 'going somewhere else' while reading a book. These are all examples of natural trance states.

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which is a little bit like daydreaming. Have you ever driven somewhere and during the journey your mind has been focussed on something completely different to the job of driving, and when you have arrived at your destination, you realise you remember no details of the drive? You were in a hypnotic trance! You were miles away consciously, but your sub-conscious mind was driving the car and doing it quite adequately without the conscious mind interfering, then suddenly you're back to reality.

Hypnosis is special because it opens up a channel of communication between the conscious and the sub-conscious mind. It is not sleep, but a relaxed state, where we focus and close down the conscious mind, where we store all of our beliefs and values. We can then allow ourselves to absorb new values, beliefs and desires, thus enabling changes that we want to happen, to occur.

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis, in itself is the altered state, whereas Hypnotherapy is the use of various techniques within that altered state to bring about change, to resolve conflicts and to heal.

Hypnotherapy is a two way process between the therapist and the client, a professional partnership. A person cannot be hypnotised unless he or she agrees and co-operates - this cannot be stressed enough. Also whilst hypnotised, nobody can make you do anything which you do not want to do.

Modern Hypnotherapy is moving out of the realm of magic, wizards and stage entertainment and into the clear light of common sense.

Our approach is based upon proven clinical psychological principals, delivered in an easy to use format, to give you what you need, quickly and comfortably. This is the real science of hypnosis and psychotherapy and it's what Mind, Body & Life Solutions is all about.

Is it different from stage hypnosis?

Yes it is very different - stage hypnosis is about entertainment.

A stage hypnotist doesn't choose a person because they are a good hypnotic subject, he will pick them because they're good entertainment. Most stage operators can ask members of the public to do ridiculous things and they will do it, there's no hypnosis involved. Stage hypnotists choose people who want to enjoy themselves, who want to be on that stage. They want to be compliant, they want to do what they are being asked to do, and they want to be the stars of the show.

What does Hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. Everyone feels different. Some people may feel quite mellow and may feel light or weightless. Some may feel very heavy, as if sinking into a chair. The main thing that people say, is that they feel relaxed and at ease, with a sense of well being. It is very much like daydreaming and you may not believe that you are hypnotised at all.

People often say things like "I could hear every word you were saying", or "I felt like I could open my eyes if I wanted to". It is vital to note that hypnosis isn't like being asleep - you can be aware of everything around you, just like when you meditate (in fact the two states are nearly identical). In hypnosis, you simply have a stronger focus internally, plus wonderful deep relaxation.

How does Hypnosis work?

It works in a very natural way. People are constantly capable of change, which can happen more powerfully in an altered state. There are certain abilities, which are enhanced during the actual hypnotic state itself, which enable people to achieve success in their desire for change or self-improvement:

- the ability to IMAGINE

- the ability to REMEMBER

- the ability to be CREATIVE

- RESPONSIVENESS TO SUGGESTIONS

It is this last ability, which allows us to take on new ideas, beliefs and values.

In this altered state, which we call hypnosis, suggestions to the sub-conscious mind can supply us with the feelings and emotions that go with imagination and creativity to bring about changes within your feeling system, your emotional system, and this can change your values, perceptions and beliefs. It's what makes hypnosis an incredibly powerful means to achieve your dreams.

Will I be in control?

You are more in control of yourself in hypnosis than at any other time. Remember that you are in control of your own mind, wishes and desires, no one can make you do anything that you do not wish to do.

Crazy news stories, stage hypnotists and gossip has led many people to believe that when you are in hypnosis, you are under someone else's control. Nothing could be further from the truth. When you are hypnotised, you are just really relaxed and focused - in fact, the most common comment is "Was I hypnotised?". The only reason people stay in hypnosis is because it feels fantastic. Any time they want to, they can get up and walk away.

Is it safe?

It's perfectly safe, you cannot get trapped in a hypnotic state. If for any reason you have to break off in the middle of a session, you can simply say to yourself " back to normal wake-full awareness", and you will be out of your hypnotic state and able to deal with anything that needs your attention. Remember that hypnosis is simply a deeply relaxed state, you are not asleep, and you are in control.

Who can be hypnotised?

The answer to this question is undoubtedly "virtually everyone". This claim must, however, be qualified by the observation that it will also depend upon one's willingness to be hypnotised at the time. This willingness will itself depend upon a number of factors, not least of which will be the strength of the person's particular need and their trust and confidence in the therapist concerned.

There are some exceptions, such as young children, people with mental difficulties or those with extremely sub-normal intelligence.

Being hypnotised is not a sign of gullibility or suggestibility on the part of the client, as nobody can be hypnotised against their will.

Can hypnosis really work for me?

Hypnosis can work for you if you are prepared to go along with what we are asking you to do, and that is just simply to relax and listen. It's easy - there's no effort required.

Will it work if someone's sceptical?

Many people have undergone major operations using nothing but hypnosis to block out the pain - that should convince even a hardened sceptic that hypnosis works and the mind is extremely powerful. Regardless of that, though, yes hypnosis will still work with sceptical clients, and they derive just as much benefit as anybody else. Hypnosis is not a belief system. People are amazed at the changes they can make for themselves, whether they are sceptical or not.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?

You will be asked to sit in an ordinary chair, close your eyes, and listen to my voice (and some relaxing music) as you are guided into a comfortable, pleasant, relaxed state. You will be fully aware of what is happening all the time.

How long is each session and how many are needed?

Each session of Hypnotherapy is tailored to the individual client, but is likely to take around 40 to 60 minutes. Following the free consultation, you will be advised as to the course of treatment that we recommend - this could vary from one session up to six or seven for more complex conditions.

Will I remember what has been said?

Most people recall everything that has been said, but others only recall certain parts, in much the same way as remembering a dream. The benefits of the session will be the same, regardless of whether you remember every word or not.

Can you tell me more about the FREE consultation?

We offer a free consultation lasting around 30-60 minutes (not required on our successful Stop Smoking Now program). This allows us to talk through your particular problems, find your needs and requirements, and formulate an individual program of treatment for you. You can also use this time to ask any questions that you may have about the therapy or procedures involved, etc., and to determine that we are the right people to help you.

Many of our clients say that this free session alone often produces therapeutic results for them, and it gives them the confidence to take the next step to resolve their problem.

Book your FREE CONSULTATION NOW

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, you can bring a friend or relative along to the FREE CONSULTATION if you feel that you can talk freely in front of them, although we do advise against this so that we can get quickly to the root of the problem. Please note that we do not allow friends or relatives to be present during therapy.

Some Common Misconceptions

You will not be asleep or unconscious.

People are sometimes concerned that they will "lose control" in hypnosis. Regardless of how deeply people may go in hypnosis and however passive they may appear to be, they actually remain in full control of the situation. They are fully able to talk if they wish to and they can stand up and leave the room at any time. A hypnotised person can not be made to do anything against their usual ethical or moral judgement, or religious belief. It is likely that the notion of a loss of control stems from most people's misconception of stage hypnosis, wherein participants are apparently made to perform all manner of (usually foolish) acts.

What else should I know?

All consultations are strictly by appointment only - casual callers cannot be seen.

What Professional Bodies are you registered with?

The Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (APHP) - The APHP is an exclusive body, dedicated to maintaining a high standard of professionalism amongst its members, all of whom are fully covered by professional indemnity insurance and committed to ongoing training. It is only possible to join the Association via invitation or training by an accredited hypnotherapy school. Members are bound by a Code of Conduct and Ethics, with a formal Complaints Procedure, which is freely available to the public.

The National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP) - The NCP is one of the longest established societies of its type in the United Kingdom, being formed in 1971 following the 'Foster Report' on the statutory registration of psychotherapists.

The Hypnotherapy Society (HS) - The purpose of the HS is to create and maintain good academic, professional, practical, financial and ethical standards of training, supervision, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), professional practice & the provision of goods, services and contracts within the profession of Hypnotherapy in the United Kingdom.

The General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) & General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) - Originally established following Department of Health guidelines, the GHSC are now actively participating within the Working Group for Hypnotherapy Regulation whose constituent members represent some 80% of the profession. The Group's primary purpose is to facilitate agreed standards within the profession and subsequently bring about voluntary self-regulation (VSR) - an officially recognised status - for the entire industry. The GHR is comprised of individual practitioners who are able to satisfy the criteria with regard to both training and ongoing requirements as determined by the GHSC. All GHR Registered Practitioners are required to accept the published Code of Ethics and Complaints & Disciplinary Procedure.

The British Thought Field Therapy Association (BTFTA) - The BTFTA is well established, and membership is only open to suitably trained professionals. An increasing number of senior Psychologists, Doctors and Consultants are discovering the remarkable ability of Thought Field Therapy to resolve even complex issues in a fraction of the time taken by conventional approaches.

The National Regulatory Register for Hypnotherapy (NRH). The Working Group for Hypnotherapy Regulation is formed of more than 20 professional organisations, that have chosen to work together to progress Voluntary Self Regulation in hypnotherapy, and to create agreed standards in all aspects of the profession. Over 4200 hypnotherapists have signed up to participate in the process - making it already the most significant regulatory step forward in U.K. hypnotherapy.

The UK Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisations (UKCHO). The aim of UKCHO is to promote the professional regulation of hypnotherapy within the United Kingdom. The aim of such regulation is to set standards of ethics and training which ensure that all hypnotherapy practitioners are safe and competent to practice, thus fulfilling the primary criterion of professional regulation - protecting the public. UKCHO has done this by establishing a code of conduct, ethics and practice, setting national occupational standards and a common curriculum for hypnotherapy training, and establishing this National Register of Hypnotherapists.

“With a unified Register of Members, patients and members of the public would then have a single, reliable point of reference for standards, and would be protected against the risk of poorly-trained practitioners and have redress for poor service”. (House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology Report on CAM’).

The above professional bodies insist on members having Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance, and there's also a requirement for Continual Professional Development (ongoing training).
